Texas Defensive Driving Ticket Dismissal

Take an online defensive driving course to dismiss traffic tickets for moving violations.

Driver safety courses are six hours in length, and the State provides ninety days from the date of plea to complete the course and provide the court clerk with a certificate of completion. Drivers with a good driving record should consider taking the course, even if they have not received a moving violation, to reduce their insurance premiums. Most insurance companies provide up to a 10% discount for completing the course.

Defensive Driving Texas Requirements

The State of Texas allows a driver to take a defensive driving course to dismiss a traffic ticket under the following conditions:

  1. Driver holds a valid Texas driver’s license or learner’s permit.
  2. The driver admits guilt or pleads no contest to the traffic violation and requests to take a defensive driving course for dismissal.
  3. The driver has not previously taken a defensive driving course in the past twelve months.
  4. If you have a Citation/Ticket, simply contact the Court Clerk at the phone number listed on the back of the traffic ticket and ask if you can complete a defensive driving course to dismiss your citation/ticket. The court will provide 90 days to complete a driver safety course and submit to the Court official, including a driving record.

Log in:

Enter your driver’s license number, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number.

  1. Enter your audit number:

You will need to provide your driver’s license audit number to access your record.

  1. Request your record:

Select the type of driver record you need (e.g., status record, 3-year history, or certified version) and enter your address.

  1. Review and pay:

Review your order details, then submit your payment information to complete the purchase.

  1. Print your record:

You will be able to print your driving record by clicking the “Print Driver Record” button.

How much does it cost to take defensive driving in Texas?

The State mandates a minimum online course fee of $25.00 (Using School Facility Cost $40).  Most course providers use this minimum fee.  For ticket dismissal, the State of Texas also requires a copy of a driver’s driving record.

Can you take defensive driving online in Texas?

Yes, and the benefit of taking an online course is that you can complete the six-hour course all at once, or an hour or two at a time, based on your schedule.  It’s also very convenient.  Classroom-based courses require travel to and from, and you must meet their schedule.
