TDLR-approved Texas Parent Taught Driver Education Online course (includes online classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction). Everything your teen needs to get their Texas learner’s permit and driver’s license.

Teens between the ages of 14 years 10 months and 17 years of age are eligible to enroll in Texas Parent Taught Drivers Education. Teen students must be at least 15 years of age to receive their Texas learner’s permit.

The steps for the Texas Parent Taught Drivers Education course included:

  1. Enroll in our Parent Taught Driver’s Education course.
  2. You must receive approval and your Texas Parent Taught Driver Ed packet. By ordering at the TDLR website: https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/ParentTaught/PTSelect.aspx  (Note: You must wait until TDLR sends your packet, whether mailing in or completing the TDLR request online, before you can begin the course.)
  3. Begin the online classroom training and complete the first six hours, passing the DPS-approved exam, get the Learner Permit Certificate (DEE-964), and apply for a Texas learner’s permit at your local DPS office.
  4. After receiving their Texas learner’s permit, students can begin the in-car lessons with the designated parent instructor.
  5. Complete the remaining online lessons and behind-the-wheel training, which cover all Parent-Taught Driver’s Education Requirements.
  6. Receive the Driver License Certificate (DEE-964) & take it to the Texas DPS office for a Texas provisional driver’s license (Having held their Texas learner’s permit or at least six months and being at least the age of 16).
  7. After completing the 24-hour courses, complete your 7-hour x 7-hour driving instruction, and log it here.
  8. After completing the 7-hour x 7-hour driving instruction, complete your 30 hr driving practice, a nd log it here.

How long does it take to complete Parent-Paught Drivers Ed?

The course includes 24 hours of online instruction and 44 (7 hours x 7hrs + 30 hrs) hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The State of Texas limits instruction to no more than two hours per day for online instruction and one hour per day for behind-the-wheel training.
